BUILDING TALISMANS JEWELRY

The idea of building Talismans with objects has always been intriguing to me, that is to build adornment with a sense of history and purpose. I have studied adornment with historical purpose extensively and used this idea to create my body of work. These human-made objects are made to speak to something sacred, beyond the self, and beyond time. And whether they are worn for protection, power, healing, magic, or some other mystical purpose, they are the most ancient of material attempts to reach out for some tangible quality that you may be looking for your life.

The common denominator in all the talismans, amulets, relics, and prayer box is embedded meaning. The materials used, the way a piece was formed, the intention of the maker all combined to express a particular meaning.

In these three workshops learn to build Talismans by working and building with my own techniques and practical skills of metalsmithing. These workshops build on each other to expand your knowledge and exploration of materials for an understanding and freedom of metalworking.

ALTERING OBJECTS- CAGING, STICKS & STONES

Throughout time, adornment has been filled with symbolism, mark making, cultural and political influences. As for my own work, I am, forever exploring different techniques and possibilities to embed my own marks and images to my adornment and work.

In this workshop, learn to burn into sticks and bone, rub colors and create wraps of fiber to produce and finish your own personalized small wooden talismans full of your own symbolism.

Build a sterling silver unique bezel form by caging. Learn to build dimensionally so an object can be safely encased and protected but viewed from all sides. Build wire cage structure with prongs. Beginning students will learn to master soldering with dimensional wire. Intermediate students will expand metalworking skills into this new form of height and dimension. Bring small stones if you would like to add on.

Build a bezel to set a stone with recycled scrap silver, forged wire, beaded wire and more. Learn soldering in layers with techniques such as sweat, and pick soldering.

Expand on these techniques in the afternoon by learning my techniques for forging and assembling and creating unique links and joins by building in layers in silver with scrap silver and wire.

Create attachments and assemble. Includes trapeze attachments, hinge and stable joins.
